SEO – The importance of title tags

There are so many aspects to consider when creating an SEO campaign that sometimes the most basic and straightforward elements can be overlooked.

However, even though they may be basic, the essentials always need to be present and correct if you are to build an online marketing campaign that actually works. When it comes to the basics, nothing is more intrinsic than meta tags, with perhaps the most important of these being the title tag.

Complex yet simple

The world of SEO is full of terminology and techniques but many of them boil down to some easily understandable ideas.

In the same way that regularly updated content is necessary for any website to generate significant traffic, the signposts to point both users and search engines toward that site must be loud and clear.

Title tags on every web page are the signs in this case and as such need to be carefully considered.

Content and titles

Title tags come into their own because although search engine algorithms now consider so many other things for SERPs, an enormous amount of importance is still placed on correct titling.

In fact, the title tag is what you actually see when you search for something in Google, so they are the largest and therefore most noticeable elements of SERPs.

Thankfully making the most of title tags is something that anyone can do with a little thought and application.

Best practice

For many things involved in SEO campaigns auto-generation can be a big help, however, when it comes to titling you should never rely on it.

For instance, WordPress users might have a tag created for them based on the title of the page or post, but this needs your own input.

There is a standard pattern that should be followed for title tags and that is “Keyword Rich Title | Brand Name.”

This means you should never try and fit lots of keywords in a title tag, and it also means they should be easy to read so that people can interact with them. SEO is all about good user experience, even when it comes to tags.
