Consumers searching for a thinner mobile device are to get new options, thanks to Samsung. The Korean device manufacturer is rolling out its thinnest smartphone ever – the new Galaxy A8. The company is also rolling out its thinnest ever tablet device, in the shape of the Galaxy Tab S2, available in 8-inch and 9.7-inch models.
Launched for the Chinese market on 15th July but without much fanfare, the Galaxy A8 has a thickness of just 5.9mm. This makes it thinner than both the existing Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3 models, which had previously been the thinnest Samsung smartphones available on the market. The new A8 does retain the design of the A5 and A3, however.
The Galaxy A8, made completely from metal, could be described as being more of a mid-range than high-end model. The A8 is an important development for Samsung from a business perspective, however, as the company battles to head off stiff competition in the Chinese market from Xiaomi, the Beijing-based company. Xiaomi’s Redmi and Mi 4 phones have been eroding Samsung’s share of the Chinese smartphone market, which is the largest in the world. The Galaxy A5 and A3 were both aimed at the Chinese market also, so it is obvious that Samsung is concentrating heavily on China. This should come as no surprise. In the past year, Samsung’s share of shipments to China took a 50 per cent drop. It remains to be seen when the device will be rolled out in markets outside of China.
In terms of its specs, the Galaxy A8 has a 1080p OLED display, 5.7 inches in size. The eight-core Snapdragon 615 processor and 2GB RAM will make content load up quickly. The 3,050 mAh battery is larger than that in the Galaxy S6, and its 151g weight is notably light.
The Galaxy Tab S2, is just 5.6mm thick, making it thinner than the Apple iPad Air, which is 6.1mm. It has Android 5.0 Lollipop and features an impressive octo-core processor – teaming four 1.9GHz cores with four 1.3GHz cores and offering 3GB of RAM and 32 or 64GB of internal memory.
Samsung will launch the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 globally in August. The models will come in black or white.
