Facebook are testing out a new feature, which could steer more traffic to your site depending on the amount of ‘likes’ it has. The new feature is called ‘Popular Pages in Your Area’ and flags up business and organisations close to the user’s area.
Facebook’s algorithms already display results tailored to the user’s interests in their ‘Trending Topics’ feature. For instance, if you post lots of photos of your basset hound and like many basset related pages, you’ll see an advert for Basset Hound Insurance pop up with regularity on your news feed.
The sites shown on the ‘Popular Places in Your Area’ feature will be those pages that have lots of likes from your friends be it a direct like or a check in from your friends. Pages with more likes, but not liked by your friends, may come lower down on the list.
This may lead to a paid advertising option for local business who are keen to up their brand recognition or get their brand ethos out where people can latch on to it. It’s a good opportunity to reach their target customer base using Facebooks algorithms to narrow down customers by the posts they make and the pages they have already liked.
Facebook added their last feature, ‘Trending Topics’, in January 2014, and it has proved to be popular with Facebook users. It is believed that the ‘Popular Pages in Your Area’ feature will be rolled out slowly if it proves equally as successful. A feature that brings together businesses with their specific client base will be unlikely to fail.
