It looks like Matt Cutts has discovered how much fun it is to use a green screen. In his latest webmaster video, Google’s head of spam first appears as a disembodied head, then uses his hands to cover his face, merging in and out of visibility. His point? To let businesses know that you need a good website with great content if you want to be visible on the web.
In the video, Matt Cutts tells us that the biggest SEO mistake businesses make is to simply not have their own website, and to rely on third party recourses like Yelp or local business listings to get their information and details across to potential clients. So, how do you go about getting a good web presence?
“If you can, try to make sure you have a website because otherwise people won’t be able to find you” Cutts said. “And that would really be a shame because if people have a great business we want to know about that. It would suck if we weren’t able to find a website on the web.”
Cutts has also talked about the importance of good content on your website, because content is a core metric in the Google search algorithm, and sites can be penalised for thin or duplicate content.
“Head might have meta description, meta tags, all that sort of stuff. If you want to put stuff in the head, that’s great, make sure it unique, don’t just do duplicate content, but stuff in the body makes a really big difference as well” Cutts said. “If you don’t have the text, the words that will really match on the page, then it’s going to be hard for us to return that page to users.”
